May 03, 2019 Default apps are set on the basis of file type. If you have, for example, a PNG file the same program will open it and all other PNG files on your system. That’s not to say you cannot open it with other apps. You just have to select the app and that takes a few more clicks.
Certain actions that you perform on your Mac will cause default apps to open. For example, clicking a document may open Pages. But what if you want Microsoft Word to open instead? You can also set your default web browser and email reader.

Oct 17, 2017 I have to set the default telephone app on 10 iMacs and don't want to register 10 iCloud-accounts just to do the facetime login and being able to open the preferences there. That's ridiculous. Installed RCDefaultApp and set the default telephone app there but the phone-icon in contacts application is still greyed-out.
